VISITING FOR THE FIRST TIME?

WELCOME TO LYNNHAVEN - We're glad you found us and hope that you will visit in person soon!

OUR PURPOSE
Lynnhaven United Methodist Church is a body made one by belief in Jesus Christ as Divine Lord and Savior.  Our Purpose is to grow toward Jesus Christ and proclaim Christ to the world.  We find our growth and express our witness through worship, mission, fellowship, outreach and stewardship.  In all this, we seek to "Love God above all and to love our neighbor as ourselves."

Lynnhaven UMC is part of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, Norfolk District. LUMC began in 1873 as a small neighborhood church serving the farmers and fishermen of the rural Little Neck Peninsula.  The original structure was destroyed by fire in 1914 but members soon rebuilt and began worshiping in what is currently our Chapel, designated a Virginia Beach Historical Register site in 2009. As the surrounding community has grown and changed, so has the church. Many additions have been made to the building since the early days to accommodate the current membership of over 700.  But the church has never lost that “small church” feeling -- the special sense of connectedness and caring and "family." Years ago church members adopted the description “Where people care about people,” and it remains true today.
So, we extend to you a warm welcome and invite you to visit us soon! If you have questions that are not answered on this page, please do not hesitate to contact the church office or any of OUR STAFF for more information.

On Sunday Mornings we offer two times for worship (8:45am & 11:00am) as well as Sunday School for all ages. A nursery is available from 8:45am to Noon. Click HERE for a schedule and description of classes.
A Contemporary Worship Service is offered every Sunday evening from 5:00 to 6:00pm. This service is relaxed and casual with music led by our worship band Raising Stones and the message given by one of our young adults. A nursery is available by request.  (Contact the church office the Wednesday prior to arrange childcare.)
Our Wonderful Wednesday activities take place Wednesday evenings September through April and are designed for fellowship, faith-building and fun.  Dinner is available by reservation 5:30-6:15pm. (Your first visit is free!) Bible Studies and Small Groups meet afterwards (6:15-7:15pm), with Prayer Fellowship in the Chapel at 6:30pm. A description of those options can be found HERE.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Can I blend in or will I be recognized as a first-time visitor? We'd love to meet you but we definitely won't put you on the spot.  Our members are friendly, so expect that people will introduce themselves and want to learn your name.  We are a medium size church with average attendance for Sunday worship of about 350.  We're large enough that you can find a place to plug in, but not so large that you get lost in the crowd.
What's your musical style?  We praise God with a blend of contemporary worship music and the beautiful hymns from our past. Our choir sings during the 11am worship service.  We also enjoy occasional special music by our children's choirs, our Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus, and individuals in our church family.  In our Contemporary Service on alternate Sunday evenings we are led by our Worship Band in a style of music that has great appeal for young people and families.
What is the style of dress?  Anything from casual to coat and tie.
Is a nursery provided for little ones?  During the morning worship times and Sunday School we have both infant and toddler nurseries staffed by loving and nurturing paid professionals who are assisted by caring volunteers.  There is a first-time registration process as well as a weekly check-in procedure, so allow a little bit of time for this on your first visit.  (A nursery is provided by request on Sunday evenings during the contemporary service.  Just contact the church office the Wednesday before to arrange childcare.)
Is there something available for young children during the worship time?  There is a special "Children's Time" with the pastor early in each morning worship service, after which children (age 4 through 3rd grade) have the option of going to "Children's Church" where they will hear stories from the Bible and participate in crafts and games and singing.  Our Children's Church is led by volunteers on a weekly rotating basis.
How will I know where to go for Sunday School?  You'll find friendly greeters in the Welcome Center (next to the sanctuary) following the early worship service and they are happy to help you find a class that meets your specific needs and interests.  They'll even walk you to your room and make the initial introductions!  (Check out the information on the Sunday School page to help you find a class that's right for you.)
