Lynnhaven United Methodist Church is a body made one by belief in Jesus Christ as Divine Lord and Savior.  Our Purpose is to grow toward Jesus Christ and proclaim Christ to the world.  We find our growth and express our witness through worship, mission, fellowship, outreach and stewardship.  In all this, we seek to "Love God above all and to love our neighbor as ourselves."

Lynnhaven UMC is part of the Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church, Elizabeth River District.  LUMC began in 1873 as a small neighborhood church serving the farmers and fishermen of the rural Little Neck Peninsula.  The original structure was destroyed by fire in 1914 but members soon rebuilt and began worshiping in what is currently our Chapel, designated a Virginia Beach Historical Register site in 2009. As the surrounding community has grown and changed, so has the church. Many additions have been made to the building since the early days to accommodate the current membership of over 700.  But the church has never lost that “small church” feeling -- the special sense of connectedness, caring and "family." Years ago church members adopted the description “Where people care about people,” and it remains true today.
So, we extend to you a warm welcome and invite you to visit us soon! If you have questions that are not answered on this page, please do not hesitate to contact the church office or any of OUR STAFF for more information.

On Sunday Mornings we offer two times for worship (9:00am & 11:00am). KidZone, an interactive, Bible-based program, is available at 9am and 11am for children age 4 years through 5th grade. Children may be checked in and out of KidZone at any time betinning at 8:45am until after the 11am service. Between 10 and 11am, special projects, games and crafts for children are available in the Activity Room so parents may enjoy their Sunday morning Small Group.  A nursery is available from 8:45am to Noon. (Please note that during the months of July and August and occasional Sundays throughout the year, there will be only one worship service at 10am. Please check the church bulletin, weekly email, monthly newsletters, and church Facebook page to be reminded of those special dates.)

Adult and Youth Small Groups are offered on Sunday mornings and during the week in short-term sessions throughout the school year. These discipleship opportunities are designed for fellowship, faith-building and fun.  Please consult the church bulletin, weekly email and monthly newsletter for the current listings or contact Jerrilynn Gleason (adults) or Marlene Passarelli (youth) for more information.
There are many opportunities to connect and participate at LUMC. Visit our MINISTRIES and MISSIONS sections to discover what’s currently available, and please know that we are always open to the Holy Spirit's leading.  If God is prompting you in a new direction of mission or ministry, please talk to the Pastor or staff about it!
Can I blend in or will I be recognized as a first-time visitor?  We'd love to meet you but we definitely won't put you on the spot.  Our members are friendly, so expect that people will introduce themselves and want to learn your name.  We are a medium size church with average attendance for Sunday worship of about 300.  We're large enough that you can find a place to plug in, but not so large that you get lost in the crowd.

Each Sunday every person in attendance at worship completes a Connection Card where they are able to provide basic contact information, request prayer, respond to the message, connect with a small group or volunteer. There is an information counter in the Welcome Center where volunteers are able to answer any questions you might have.
What's your musical style?  We praise God with a blend of contemporary worship music and the beautiful hymns from our past. Our choir alternates singing in the 9am and 11am worship services.  We also enjoy occasional special music by our children's choirs, our Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus, our Handbells, and individuals in our church family.
What is the style of dress?  Mostly casual but you'll generally find anything from shorts and jeans to coat and tie.
Is a nursery provided for little ones?  Beginning at 8:45am and continuing until the end of the 11am worship service, we have both infant and toddler nurseries staffed by loving and nurturing paid professionals assisted by caring volunteers.  Two of our wonderful nursery workers have been on staff for 20+ years!  There is a first-time registration process as well as a weekly check-in procedure, so allow a little bit of time for this on your first visit.
Is there something available for young children during the worship time?  KidZone is available during each worship service for children age 4 years to 5th grade. Children may be checked in and out of KidZone in the Welcome Center at any time beginning at 8:45am until after the 11am service.
How will I know where to go?  You'll find friendly greeters at our entry doors beginning 15 minutes before each service, and also in the Welcome Center. They are happy to help you and may be able to suggest small group or mission/ministry opportunities that meet your specific needs and interests.
